PHP 5.6 is now recommended for WordPress, will Site5 support it?

[2 Grey Star Level]

Recently WordPress.org updated his minimum system requirements. They now recommend that your web host supports PHP 5.6 and MySQL 5.5 or greater (see: https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/).

Also PHP will release the last security updates for PHP 5.4 today.

As far as I’m aware, the latest PHP version that Site5 supports is 5.4 and I was wondering if (and when) Site5 will support later versions of PHP.

Hello,

While 5.6 is recommended, WordPress will continue to run normally on older versions. WordPress is not going to stop functioning.

5.4 is currently the most recent version available on our servers, and while PHP is no longer releasing updates for it after today, we continue to maintain it and keep it secure.

There are plans in place to upgrade, though there is no set timeline in place. When this moves forward, announcements will be sent to our customers in plenty of time, letting everyone know.

If you want to upgrade to a newer version, an unmanaged VPS is an option. As you have root access on that package, you can install and run 5.6, or any other version of PHP.

Nice cut and paste answer.. really unhelpful though. When do we at least get php 5.5, it is getting a little ridiculous.

Hello,

I am sorry that you feel my response was unhelpful. It was accurate, however – WordPress will continue to run normally on 5.4, and PHP will remain secure. There is no fixed time for an update to 5.5 or 5.6, though it will be announced well ahead of time, when the upgrade happens.
