How to set up SVN on shared platform ?

I have recently taken up programming as it interested me besides my regular design job. A friend of mine told me that setting up a SVN on the server helps a lot during the development process, however going through the QA I could find no answers for SVN.

If anybody can help me with step by step tutorials to set up SVN using cpanel on shared hosting platform.

PS: I have tortoise SVN installed on my PC.
