Once a photo gallery is created, is it possible to link it to a component in a page (i.e. a thumbnail) rather than having it link through main navigation? I have been unable to do this.

Actually, my real question is when you add a photo gallery to your site, why does it make it necessary to login as an admin to access it on a published site?

To access the backend of the gallery, you would need admin access. But it should display normally to visitors without the need to login. Make sure you are using the public-facing portion of the gallery when linking it to your site, rather than the admin area.
