I currently have a shared hosting plan with site5. I’m curious if there would be any benefit to upgrading to “Cloud Hosting”, which would be $20 a month instead of $5.
– What are the technical differences between the two? (ex: hardware, setup, number of sites on a server, etc etc)
– Are sites on Cloud Hosting served quicker than those on Shared Hosting? (ie, would I expect to see any performance improvements)
– How is it more reliable than the shared hosting plan? (99.9% vs 99.99%)
– Does it make sense to upgrade from one plan to the other? And if so, how would one do it?
thanks,
– Pat

Hi Pat,
The technical differences are minimal – you can have unlimited sites on a Cloud plan, just like with most of the shared plans. The connection is the same, and you would be unlikely to see a speed upgrade. The real benefit of Cloud hosting is reliability.
The cloud servers are set up with hardware redundancy, meaning if there is a hardware failure we shunt the traffic to new hardware almost immediately, changing the downtime from a few hours to a few minutes, at most. Please note that this is only for hardware issues – if Apache becomes corrupt on the server, it will need to be restored and repaired as normal.
Whether or not you should upgrade, and the benefits of doing so, is really up to you. We can certainly take care of it for you, however, and even move your data over. Just open a ticket requesting the upgrade, and we can take over from there.
