How do I transfer my domain name and MX records to Site5

[2 Grey Star Level]

I need to transfer an existing .org domain name (unlocked, no privacy) from godaddy.com to Site5. The DNS zone file contains several MX records forwarding emails to Google Apps. My primary goal is to minimize the email down time. Ideally, the end users do not even notice the transfer. I have the following questions:

1. How long will it take to transfer the domain name from godaddy.com to Site5? My understanding is that this is a manual process initiated by Site5.

2. What is the recommended order of steps? (e.g. domain name first then MX records, MX records first then domain name, …)

Thanks,

Milan

Hello Milan,

If you already have the domain “zone” in our system (its attached to a hosting account), you could go ahead and set all the needed dns records for Google before starting the domain transfer. If you don’t already have the zone, I recommend that you add the domain as an addon domain, or as a parked domain (what ever fits your needs) so that you can add the MX records before you start the transfer.

Once you have all the records added on our end, I recommend that you change the “name servers” to point to your hosting here at Site5. If you don’t do this step before starting the transfer process, it could delay the prorogation time even more. It will also allow you to ensure that everything is setup correctly here at Site5 before starting the final transfer.

Once the name servers have been pointed to us and you have confirmed that everything is still working correctly, the last step is to start the domain transfer itself. You can follow the steps listed at the link below to see how to start that process.

If everything is correct in the Site5 zone file before you point the name servers to us, there should be little to no downtime for your clients. The actual propagation time can vary, but normally you should expect the following.

Site5 Zone Changes: ~2 Hours (until the NS is pointed to us you wont see any changes)
Name Server Change: 2-24 Hours
Full Domain Transfer: 2-5 Days

While the domain transfer is happening, you should not see any downtime since the domain is already using our name servers.
