What DDoS facilities are in other datacentres?

[2 Grey Star Level]

I’m reluctant to move my Site5 VPS out of SoftLayer’s Dallas facility simply because of the unrivaled network and Cisco DDoS mitigation hardware available.

What DDoS mitigation is available in the Europe datacentres such as UK and NL? I once moved my Site5 shared hosting to the UK (ServerBeach) and happened to be hit by my first small DoS attack. My website’s dedicated IP was null routed by ServerBeach.

Thanks.

Great question and something I’m working on adding to the public KB and to our official location page at Site5 as this get’s a bit complicated.

SoftLayer currently uses both Arbor Networks and Cisco Guard depending when the DC is built. I believe they are going Arbor in the future but we haven’t gotten a clear answer yet.

In Amsterdam for our European location that DC has Arbor Networks as well so it would be the same.

In the UK DC in London we don’t have any DDOS protection besides null routing IPs and working with the networking command center to block those. We are working with them to add this and they are moving us to their brand new DC facility later this year. So ask me then as it should be updated and have full protection we can turn on.

Thanks, Ben

Also a quick note, they don’t null route small attacks, only big ones. So the only time they would null route something is if it is large enough to kill the entire connection.

We also have a variety of tools we use internally like mod_evasive to block small attacks depending on what they are doing.

Thanks, Ben
