WHM/cPanel Backups for Resellers and VPS accounts

[2 Grey Star Level]

In the Terms of Service, you’ve stated:

“Site5 performs nightly backups of shared and reseller servers; however, these backups are for Site5’s administrative purposes only, and are in NO WAY GUARANTEED! Customers are responsible for maintaining their own backups on their own personal computers. Site5 does not provide any sort of compensation for lost or incomplete data in the event that backups do not function properly (even if the malfunction was due to negligence on Site5’s part). We will do our best to ensure complete and accurate backups, but assume no responsibility for this duty. Always back your site up to your personal computer! We make no guarantees about the availability of backups.”

This statement concerns me very much. Site5 doesn’t provide a way to automate backups for all my cPanel accounts through WHM and the argument made by a customer rep is: “it’s because Site5 already does 7 days backups for me”. If these backups are not guaranteed and we’re encouraging to make our own backups, why is the backups through WHM feature not available for resellers and VPS customers who want that reliability? We need to backup to an FTP server offsite. I’d like to automate backups for all my clients but don’t want to setup up cron jobs on each individual cpanel account. That would be a nightmare to maintain and edit! Consider the mere scenario when we change our backup server’s location or credentials. We’d have to go in each and every cpanel account and update that information in the scripts. Sure there are ways to automate such changes but the argument stands that any reseller would need to setup his own backup workflow and that process with Site5’s Reseller and VPS accounts is suggesting it needs to be done on cPanel account bases and not by WHM account basis.

I’d like to hear your view on this and an explanation on why that is the case. I might be missing something because it seems like such an obvious feature to have (which is already implemented in WHM but Site5 installations takes it out).

Thank you
Ali

I’d like to also add this point. If I setup cron jobs for my clients on their cPanel accounts, then they choose to change their cpanel password (as most would as a security measure) , then the cron job for backup would fail since the password would be incorrect. If it was setup through WHM then the password change in cPanel for individual users would affect the backup.

Hello Ali,

We unfortunately cannot offer the WHM backup solution to resellers because it requires root access to the system.

You do have full accesses to the WHM API system. This means that you could use scripts (that run under the reseller account) to accomplish automated backups. I found a few possibilities when I Googled “whm reseller backup script”.

Also, we make every effort we can to keep roughly up to 7 days’ worth of backups for all of our shared services, but they cannot be guaranteed. However, if you opt-in to the service, we do offer guaranteed backups on our VPS product line.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to reply here. I would be more than happy to answer your questions.
